Choosing your wedding venue: what Couples should really be thinking about

If you’ve just stated planning a wedding, chines are you’ve already typed something like ‘wedding venues near me’ into google. It’s usually one of the first big decisions couples make, and understandably so. Your venue sets the tone for the entire day - the atmosphere, the flow, and often even the guest list.

On this weeks episode of Totally Absolutely Engaged podcast, we sat down with the team from The Plough Inn, Eaton, to talk about what couples often dont realise when they start their venue search! As alwaysm our goal isn’t to tell you which venue to book. Instead, it’s about giving engaged couples a clearer understanding of how venues work so you can choose what feels right for your wedding.

Why your wedding venue influences more than you think

When couples first start viewing venues, it’s easy to focus on the obvious things:

  • Is it beautiful?

  • Does it fit our style?

  • Can it hold out guest numbers?

All the important questions of course! But during our podcast conversation, something that came up repeatedly was how much the venue affect the practical flow of the day as well. Things like:

  • How guests move between ceremony, drinks reception and dinner?

  • Where suppliers set up?

  • How much space there is for different parts of the day?

  • Whether everything happens in one location or across multiple spaces?

These details aren’t always obvious on a first visit, but they can make a real difference to how relaxed the day feels.

Wedding venues aren’t one size fits all

Another thing that became clear during the conversation is that venues operate in very different ways! Some venues are:

  • All inclusive, with catering, coordination and packages

  • Dry Hire, where couples bring in all the suppliers themselves

  • Partially managed, offering some services but flexibility elsewhere

None of these approaches is better than the others, they simply suit diffetn types of couples and planning styles. Some people love having everything organised in one place. Others enjoy the freedom to design every detail. Understanding this early can save a lot of confusion during the planning process.

Questions couples often forget to ask wedding venues

One of the most useful takeaways from our interview was how valuable the right questions can be when viewing a venue. Beyond the obvious logistics, couples might want to ask about:

  • What a typical wedding day timeline lok like?

  • How many weddings they host each year

  • Whether they are preferred supplier lists

  • What support is available on the day

  • How space are used through the celebration

These conversations often reveal how a venue really opertaed behind the scenes and that insight can help couples picture their won day much more easily.

The emotional side of choosing a wedding venue

While logistics mayor, choosing a venue isn’t purely practical. Sometimes couples walk into a venue and immediately feel like it fits. Other times, a venue looks perfect online but then doesn’t feel right in person. Both reactions are completely normal.

One of the things we often encourage emerged couples to remember is that the best wedding venue isnt always th most impressive one, it's the one that supports the kind of day you want to have. For some couples, that’s a grand space with lots of guests. For others, it’s somewhere smaller, quieter or more relaxed.

There’s room for all of it!
